Evaluate various explanations for actions or events and determine which explanation best accords with textual evidence, acknowledging where the text leaves matters uncertain.

Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including analyzing how an author uses and refines the meaning of a key term over the course of a text (e.g., how Madison defines faction in Federalist No. 10).

Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media (e.g., visually, quantitatively, as well as in words) in order to address a question or solve a problem.

  • Begin by asking students to rate their vocabulary on a scale from 1 to 10.
  • Allow students to share their responses and explain their rating.
  • Now, explain that this lesson will explore tips to increase their vocabulary.
  • Distribute the How to Strengthen Your Vocabulary lesson, then start the video. Pause at 2:36 and pose these discussion points:
    • Identify the benefits of a stronger vocabulary.
    • The author suggests that reading can increase one's vocabulary; explain. What type of content does the author suggest reading? Why?
    • How can gamification impact one's vocabulary? Do you currently use gamification? If so, explain.
  • Next, resume the video and play until the end, then shoulder pair students and present the following:
    • Describe how the root structure helps expand one's vocabulary.
    • Provide examples of a vocabulary word with a root.
    • Discuss the impact of other languages on vocabulary.
  • Now, distribute the lesson quiz and ask students to complete independently.
  • Review the answers as a class.
