Vocal Exercises for Children

Teaching children how to sing or speak publicly can be such a valuable and meaningful task! This lesson will help by offering some exercises your students can do as they begin vocalizing.

Why Vocal Exercises for Children?

Have you ever told a child to project his or her voice and then been surprised when nothing changes in their speaking or singing? Some of the things that can seem obvious to adults in terms of voice modulation might be really new for children, and they might need extra practice in order to accomplish their goals. Whether you are interested in getting students ready to speak publicly or sing alone or in a group, vocal exercises can go a long way toward assisting with your objectives. Just as we need to exercise other parts of our body to keep them healthy and to use them properly, we also need to exercise our voices. Yet, children might get bored by some of the rote vocal exercises that are standard for many adults. The exercises in this lesson will help your children warm up and train their voices while still having fun and remaining engaged.

Breathing Exercises

The exercises in this section will help with the aspects of breathing that are relevant for speaking and singing.

Four Noses

Ask your students to envision that they have four noses positioned around the bottom of their stomach. Then, ask that they try to inhale from these noses instead of the nose they are used to using! This will encourage them to breathe more deeply and use their diaphragm. Practice breathing this way for several minutes, then ask them to reflect on how it felt.
