Warm-Up Activities for High School PE

Instructor: Shanna Fox

Shanna has been part of the whirlwind world of teaching middle school for 20 years. She has a Master of Education degree in instructional design.

Finding energizing ways to help your high school PE students warm up can be a challenge. Use these activities to get their blood pumping while they interact with one another.

High School PE Warm Up Activities

It's not always easy to find new ways to help high school students get moving at the beginning of PE class. Try these activities to guide your students through heart pumping warmups that require more than just athletic ability. Each activity is designed to be used with student teams and provides a way for students to engage with one another while warming up for class. By teaming students differently or varying the cards provided, these warmup activities can be used many times.

Cardio Sequence

In this activity, student teams will receive a card with a specific cardio sequence on it. They will follow the cardio sequence together two times before moving onto another card.

Materials

  • cardio sequence cards
  • simple cardio equipment, such as jump ropes (if necessary)
  • cardio exercise illustrated guide (for added support)

Preparation

To prepare, create cards that show a cardio sequence in different orders. For example, one card may show jump rope, run in place, jumping jacks, and squats. The next card may change the order or include other activities. Be sure to specify the number of reps students are expected to complete.
