Lions are very large, strong predators who need lots of food. In this lesson, you will learn how lions hunt for food, what they eat, and who eats first in the family.

Who Hunts for Lions' Food?

Can you think of an animal that doesn't have to hunt for food in the jungle, eats an enormous 15% of its body weight when food is brought to it, and eats first in its family? This animal is the male lion. Yes, the king of the jungle is a powerful and strong protector of his family, but he doesn't have to do much to find food to eat.

That's because hunting food is the job of the female lion, or lioness. She hunts for everyone in the pride, or group of lions that live together - the male, the females, and the babies.

Lionesses usually wait until dark and go out into the jungle in groups of two or three. They search for their prey, which are animals they eat, then stare at them for a while to figure out the best way to hunt them. After that, the weaker lionesses surround the prey to push it towards the middle of a circle or try to corner it in the bushes. This allows the strongest lioness to pounce on the prey and capture it.

What Foods Do Lions Eat?

Lions are carnivores, which means they are animals that only eat meat. Therefore, they hunt a variety of meaty animals for food. The prey they eat ranges from small animals such as lizards to enormous animals like hippos. Lions live in different kinds of habitats, or environments, so that has an effect on what is available for them to eat.
