What is a Star? - Lesson Plan for Elementary School

What is a star and what are they made of? This lesson plan uses a text lesson to explain key facts about the different types of stars. An activity allows students to create their own constellation books.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • define 'star'
  • explain what stars of made of
  • distinguish between the different types of stars
  • discuss the life cycle of stars

45 to 90 minutes

Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).

Materials

  • Assorted images of stars
  • Full-color paper copies of the text lesson What is a Star? - Lesson for Kids, one for each student
  • A worksheet created using the quiz from the associated text lesson, one for each student
  • Assorted photographs of different constellations of stars
    • If you can find them with their associated pictures (i.e., Cancer constellation with the picture of the crab) that would be great
  • Handheld hole punches
  • Black construction paper cut into 4'' x 4'' squares
  • White chalk
  • Yellow yarn
