Teams that work toward a shared goal boast more effectiveness than groups of people working independently. In this lesson, you'll learn more about the effectiveness of teams and why the team setting is successful.

Banding Together

You're on an airplane bound for sunny Florida when a pregnant woman seated a few rows in front of you goes into labor. It's too early to land and too late to turn the plane around. The baby is coming now! A man in your row identifies himself as a doctor; a few rows back, a nurse jumps out of her seat. Another person starts grabbing towels, while a woman in the same row starts clearing people out of the immediate area. A short time later, the baby makes his appearance, happy and healthy.

What is it about this airplane scenario that helped these strangers achieve a common goal? They operated not as a group, but as a team with a common purpose.

Why Teams Are More Effective

You see groups of people all around you every day: at the grocery store, attending a concert, cheering on their favorite sports team. Groups are all about individual people with individual goals, much like a group of people bound for Florida on an airplane. But, a group isn't the same thing as a team. Groups become teams when they band together to achieve a common purpose, such as helping the pregnant woman aboard the plane.

While a group has its place in certain scenarios, a team environment is usually more effective in a business setting. Why? Where groups are made up of workers who have individual tasks and goals, teams are interdependent on one another for successfully achieving the same goal. When there is a common goal to be achieved, teams are more effective for a number of reasons:

  • Communication is enhanced
  • Resources and skills are combined for mutual purpose
  • All members are focused on the same goal
  • Collaboration is intrinsic

Because each member of the team has a role in interdependent tasks rather than individual tasks, the combined effort of the group is more powerful than individuals acting alone.

Why Teams Get Better Results

A team-based working environment typically see better results when working toward the same goal for a number of reasons:

First, teams generally combine individuals with different talents and skillsets. Because each member of a team is connected to every other member of a team while working on a joint project, teams draw from the expertise and talent of each person equally to complete a goal.
