Winter Clothing Lesson Plan for Elementary School

Dana teaches social sciences at the college level and English and psychology at the high school level. She has master's degrees in applied, clinical and community psychology.

How does chilly weather change our wardrobes? This lesson plan is designed to support instruction for elementary students on winter clothing and includes a fun activity that gives students practice gearing up for winter weather.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • explain the impact of weather on clothing
  • list common winter clothing items


45 to 60 minutes

Curriculum Standards


Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.


Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion).


Build on others' talk in conversations by responding to the comments of others through multiple exchanges.


Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.


Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.


  • Photographs of children dressed in different types of climates (e.g. warm weather, rainy weather, cold weather, and so on)
  • A definition for the term 'winter'
  • A stack of index cards, each labeled with a different winter clothing item (including images)
  • Several boxes of assorted clothing items of all types
  • A stopwatch


  • Begin by displaying the photographs of kids dressed in different types of clothing for the class.
    • What can you tell about the climate in each of the photographs based on how the children are dressed?
    • What factors should you consider when deciding what to wear each day?
    • Do your clothing choices change each season?
  • Write the word 'winter' along with its definition on the board.
    • What does it feel like outside during the winter season?
    • What types of clothing should be worn during the winter season?
  • Review each of the index cards listed with examples of winter clothing items with the class.
