Winter Lesson Plan for Preschoolers

This lesson teaches preschoolers about what causes winter, winter weather, and its effects on wildlife. The lesson includes literature, art, and sorting activities.

Lesson Objectives

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Describe winter weather
  • Explain happens to animals during the winter

Length

  • Approximately one hour

Curriculum Standards

Earth Science: In studying earth materials and phenomena, children become aware of key characteristics of earth:

  • There are patterns of change in earth phenomena (day/night; seasons).
  • Weather and seasonal changes affect the environment.

This lesson plan is based on California standards for preschool education. Please refer to the standards for your state to check alignment.

Materials

  • Winter Facts: Lesson for Kids text lesson and accompanying quiz questions
  • Globe
  • Photographs of your location during winter (newspaper photos, calendar photos, personal photos, etc.); photographs of your location during other seasons
  • Animal Camouflage in the Snow (Hidden in Nature) by Martha E. H. Rustad or Snow Rabbit, Spring Rabbit by Il Sung Na
  • Blizzard pictures and snowflake pictures
  • Black bulletin board paper, white paint, newspaper, and washable classroom objects for painting
  • Outline of a hare/rabbit or other animal that camouflages in winter (fox, weasel, ptarmigan), printed on brown paper
  • Glue, scissors, and drawing materials
  • Calendar pages or other pictures of seasonal weather scenes for sorting
