''Wonder'' activities allow students to explore the challenges of craniofacial disorders, while identifying the main characters and addressing bullying.

Craniofacial Abnormalities

While R.J. Palacio's Wonder is a fictional story, the challenges August faced with a craniofacial disorder are real. In this activity, students will explore the disorder thoroughly.

Materials

  • Computer
  • Presentation software
  • Projector

Instructions

Ask students if they have heard about craniofacial disorders. After the discussion, share with students that craniofacial disorders are birth defects that occur in the face or head. Explain that there are several different types of craniofacial disorders such as: facial palsy, facial cleft, cleft palate, and cleft lip.

Break students into groups of three or four and assign one of the disorders to each group. Ask them to research the following information and create a presentation complete with pictures:

  • Symptoms
  • Cause
  • Diagnosis
  • Treatment

Character Identification

This activity helps students identify the main characters in Wonder.

Materials

  • Presentation software

Instructions

Prior to class, enter the following quotes on one presentation slide; then enter the characters' names on a separate slide:

  • Meanest mom in 5th grade who deletes August from the class pictures - Ms. Albans
  • The most bullied character in Wonder who was initially homeschooled - August
  • The best teacher ever - Mr. Browne
  • Has two different personalities, one at home and one at school - Olivia
  • Principal of the middle school - Mr. Tushman
  • Female who befriends August and sticks by his side - Summer
  • Unwillingly attends summer camp and loves the Pullmans - Miranda
  • High school male kid who sticks up for August - Jack
  • Nickname is Auggie and has a hard time adjusting to school - August
  • The character meanest to August - Julian
