Wonder

Stephen Chbosky's Wonder is a film starring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson about a middle school student who is different. To a certain extent, middle school students are famous for feeling isolated and awkward, but for Auggie, the protagonist, these feelings are multiplied because of a genetic disorder. The film exposes students to multiple points of view and examples of different types of courage. The following questions support classroom discussions for middle school classrooms about this film.

Introduction of Characters

The questions in this section provide background information about the characters in the film.

  • Who is Auggie Pullman? Why is it important to define someone by their interests and personality rather than their appearance?
  • Describe the members of Auggie's family. How does each member of the family respond to Auggie? How do you think their relationships would be different if Auggie had not been born with a genetic disorder? Would you like your family to be like Auggie's? Explain your answer.
  • Compare Isabel's thoughts about Auggie attending Beecher Prep to Nate's feelings. Why do you think they are different? Who do you think is right? Justify your response.
  • How do other students respond to Auggie on the first day of school? Why do you think they behave this way? What could you do to help a student like Auggie?
