World AIDS Day Project Ideas

World AIDS Day, which occurs on December 1st of each year, is designated to raise awareness about this disease. This resource contains project ideas for honoring this day.

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day, on the first day of December every year, offers an opportunity to raise community awareness, promote fundraising, fight the stigma associated with this disease, and mourn those who have passed. The following projects may be used with middle and secondary students to commemorate this day.

AIDS Stamp

Grade level: 6-8

Time: 2-3 days

Guiding Question

  • How can a postage stamp promote AIDS awareness?

Materials:

  • computer/internet
  • drawing paper
  • colored pencils/markers

Procedure:

  • In cooperation with the Universal Postal Union, countries around the world have created commemorative stamps in honor of AIDS awareness. Using the internet, students will research the history of AIDS-related stamps and its effect on the public.
  • After identifying some common symbols used to promote AIDS awareness, students will design their own stamp for World AIDS day. Students should be prepared to explain the symbolism used in their stamp.
  • Stamps will be displayed.

World AIDS Day Theme

Grade level: 6-8

Time: 1-2 days

Guiding Questions

  • Why are themes chosen each year for this day?
  • What are some possible themes for next year's event?

Materials:

  • computer/internet

Procedure:

  • Using internet research, students will identify past themes for World AIDS Day. Students should take note of patterns and how these themes have been used.
  • Working collaboratively, students will brainstorm ideas for next year's theme. Students will choose the best idea for further promotion.
  • Using the selected theme, students will create a logo and plan a campaign that appeals to emotion, humor, or some other attention-getting technique.
  • Students will create and deliver a slideshow explaining their plan.

Grade level: 9-12

Time: 3-5 days

  • Which world leader do you think should deliver the World AIDS Day message? Why?
  • What do you think this person should say?
