Yoga Lesson Plan for Elementary School

Yoga has great health benefits and can be done almost anywhere, even a classroom. Use this lesson plan to teach your students about the history of yoga and have them practice some fun and basic yoga poses.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson students will be able to do the following:

  • Identify the main idea and details of informational text about yoga
  • Describe the practice and benefits of yoga
  • Perform basic yoga poses


  • 45 - 60 minutes

Curriculum Standards


Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.


Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.


Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect.



  • Students should choose a partner at the start of the lesson. Go over the following with students:
    • What stresses you out?
    • How do you feel when you are stressed?
    • What are things that you can do to relieve stress?
  • Distribute copies of the lesson Yoga Lesson for Kids: Definition & Benefits to students.
    • Today we are going to learn about a great way to relieve stress, a practice called 'yoga.'
    • What do you already know about yoga?
  • Have students read the introduction and the lesson section 'What Is Yoga?' with their partner. Then ask students the following:
    • What is the main idea of the 'What Is Yoga?' section?
    • What are details that support the main idea?
    • Why do you think other cultures adopted the practice of yoga?
  • Have students read the lesson section 'Yoga Today' with their partner. Ask them these questions:
    • What is one important aspect of yoga?
    • How do you think meditation helps people reduce stress?
