4th Grade Science Standards in Colorado

The state of Colorado divides the science standards for 4th graders into 3 subject areas:

1: Physical Science

Students will study different energy sources and electrical circuits. They'll consider how energy transforms and learn more about both renewable and nonrenewable energy.

These physics lessons for elementary school can help 4th graders review what they need to know about electricity and other forms of energy. They can work on these lessons at their own pace, developing their understanding of these concepts without feeling rushed. Kids can also read over these lessons multiple times. Each lesson is short and focused and designed to help students understand complex subjects easily.

2: Life Science

In this grade, kids will consider the needs of living organisms, including plants and animals. They'll focus on how various species are the same or different and learn about trait variation. The different characteristics of living things will also be discussed. Information related to fossils will be covered, along with the prehistoric environment.

4th graders will also focus on the adaptations of living things. Types of habitats, ecosystem resources and habitats that are endangered will also be studied.

Students can work on these lessons on animals and plants to learn more about the living organisms in the world around them. They can build up their knowledge of ecosystems by checking out these environmental science lessons. All of these lessons include interactive quizzes that make it easy for students to check their progress.

3: Earth Science

The parts of the solar system and how they interact with one another will be discussed at this grade level. Students will also consider the movement of the moon, as well as the rising and setting of the sun.

Going over astronomy is simple with these astronomy lessons for kids. Students will have the chance to focus on the sun, moon and other celestial objects in our solar system. They can contact astronomy experts if they get stuck and need extra help with a particular concept.

4th Grade Science Competencies in Colorado

Colorado's science standards are also set up to include assessments that measure a student's competency. These checks involve questions about the scientific concepts covered in class, as well as information about real world applications of what students are learning. It also includes scientific skills that students will be expected to demonstrate throughout the year. These competencies focus on increasing a student's skills with:

  • Critical thinking and reasoning
  • Self-direction
  • Collaboration
  • Information literacy
  • Invention

In 4th grade, kids should be prepared to ask scientific questions, understand and use models and develop scientific plans. They should be able to formulate predictions by using scientific evidence and understand that evidence can often be interpreted in multiple ways. Students will learn about the changeable nature of scientific understanding and work to correctly judge evidence.

Completing these lessons on science basics can help students develop the scientific skills they'll be practicing throughout this grade, as well as helping them understand the scientific method, how to reason and scientific terminology.
