Common Core Math Standards

The Common Core Standards for 5th graders are designed to develop their understanding of vital math concepts so they can successfully apply their knowledge to solve more advanced problems as they progress in their studies. As such, student expectations for this grade level are divided among five main areas, which are outlined below.

Number and Operations - Fractions

Students should focus on adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying whole and mixed-number fractions at this grade level. They should also learn to apply this knowledge to solve word problems.

Number and Operations in Base Ten

5th graders will need to improve their understanding of place value by comparing and rounding decimals. They should also be able to perform arithmetic operations with numbers that include decimals in the 100th place value.

Measurement and Data

Kids at this grade level work towards proficiency in determining the volume of various shapes, such as prisms. They should also be able to perform metric conversions.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Students should learn to write numerical expressions using the proper symbols. They also get an introduction to ordered pairs.

5th graders begin graphing points on the x- and y-axis of the coordinate plane. They also need to practice identifying 2-D figures by their shape properties.

Additional Math Practices

In addition to the problem-solving skills outlined above, Common Core Standards for this grade suggest that students focus on sticking with problems they have trouble solving and strengthening their abstract reasoning skills. Students should also have the opportunity to get comfortable using tools like calculators and rulers.

Additionally, class work should encourage students to make precise calculations and show their work. By the end of the year, students should also be able to set up mathematical arguments and apply what they're learning to real-world situations.

Common Core Teaching Resources

You can help your students review the mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills covered by the Common Core Standards with this 5th Grade Math Study Guide. This course makes an effective supplement to classroom instruction because it allows kids to access short video lessons in order to go over the principles of multiplication and division, steps for performing operations with fractions and the properties of shapes like circles and triangles. There are also lessons that deal specifically with decimal numbers and coordinate graphs. Plus, students will be able to complete interactive quizzes at the end of each lesson, allowing them to get practice applying the information they're going over.
