Scientific Skill Standards

Arizona features several science skill standards that are used throughout the entire 7th grade. These standards involve developing scientific understanding, and include:

Inquiry Process

This standard involves training students to make observations, question what they find and create hypotheses. They will need to be able to create and carry out scientific testing. Additionally, students will need to properly analyze what they discover and formulate accurate scientific conclusions. They will also need to be able to appropriately communicate what they have found.

The History and Nature of Science

Students will explore how science is driven by the contributions of humanity. They will get the chance to explore how science serves to improve our knowledge of the world by exploring various scientific processes and by understanding the functions of scientists across time and cultures.

Personal and Social Perspectives to Science

Classroom time will be devoted to understanding how humanity has led to environmental changes, including both the risks and benefits of human impact on the environment. Additional study will include the impact of scientific and technological advances on society,

Content Knowledge Standards

Arizona also uses standards to help students focus on specific content areas. These involve:

Life Science

Students in this grade will work on understanding the characteristics that define living organisms. They will focus on studying the complex relationship between organisms and their ecosystems. Children will learn more about:

  • How structure and function relate
  • Principles of heredity
  • Food chains and ecosystems
  • Resource use
  • Population growth
  • Environmental factors

At this grade level, students will also develop a model that shows how organisms interact with their surroundings.

This Middle School Life Science Course is a great resource for students who want to reinforce the concepts they're covering in class. This study guide allows students to explore natural resources, Earth's history, different types of ecosystems and more.

Physical Science

Working on this scientific area will allow students to explore familiar objects in more depth. They will study the laws that govern motion, and special attention will be paid to energy. This subject deals with:

  • Properties of matter
  • How force and motion relate to one another
  • Energy storage and transfer

Students can access this Middle School Physical Science Course for an easy way to review the structure of matter and the relationship between force and motion. They'll be able to complete interactive quizzes to measure their understanding of this subject.

Earth and Space Science

7th graders will work on building their understanding of the Earth and how the natural world functions. Study time will also be spent ensuring students understand current issues with the planet. While working on this area, students will go over:

  • Earth's composition
  • How the Earth and the atmosphere interact
  • The rock cycle
  • Lithospheric plates and plate movement
  • Phases of the moon and the Earth's tides
  • The seasons
  • Major constellations
  • Celestial objects

Students will also model the positions of the Earth, moon and sun in relation to different eclipses.

This Middle School Earth Science Course can help students go over what they're learning in class. These lessons cover plate tectonics, how the Earth's surface is shaped and more.
