Motivation is a key component for optimal performance as a team. Team members need to feel challenged as well as have a sense of belonging and responsibility for the outcome of tasks. Try these activities to increase your team's motivation.

Team Activities to Build Motivation

There are many ways to engage your employees with a bit of fun during the workday. Whether you take a half hour break with your team to participate in a motivation activity or integrate the activity into the daily work routine, keeping team members motivated improves performance, teamwork and the bottom line. Each activity section below includes reward suggestions, though the actual reward for your teams is up to you.

Decisions, Decisions

  • Divide your employees into small groups.
  • Each team discusses a new business practice to implement to boost revenue/sales and presents it.
  • After the last presentation, pick an idea that the company will try out.
  • Each member of the winning team gets a vacation day.

This exercise will let your employees feel a sense of empowerment, which can be very motivating. Study.com offers an engaging video lesson on how else to empower employees.

Goal Getter

  • Set a number of work-related goals/tasks to be accomplished by employees in a week.
  • Each time an employee reaches a goal or completes a task, they receive a point.
  • The team member with the most points at the end of the week gets a gift card to their favorite restaurant.

When there's an attractive reward up for grabs, you'll find it easy to motivate your team. Check out a lesson on intrinsic and extrinsic rewards for other ideas.

Team Trivia

  • Develop a series of questions on company policies, best practices, industry standards, etc.
  • Divide your workforce into two teams.
  • Start going through the questions.
  • The first team to correctly answer each question gets a point.
  • The team with the most points after the last question can take the rest of the day off.
