Advanced Regents Diploma Requirements

Instructor: Laura Melega
Earning an Advanced Regents Diploma in New York State (NYS) involves additional exam requirements beyond those for a standard Regents Diploma. Find out how to receive this advanced designation and learn about tutorials and review courses that could help students achieve their goals.

How to Obtain an Advanced Designation on a Regents Diploma

Regents Diplomas are awarded to NYS high school students who meet class requirements and pass a series of standardized tests designed to ensure graduates have the academic knowledge needed to be successful once they leave high school.

To fulfill Regents exam requirements, students must score at least a 65 on five exams in English, mathematics, science, and social studies subjects. Earning an NYS Regents Diploma with an Advanced Designation is more rigorous, mandating a score of 65 or higher on 9 total exams in one of four combinations:

Diploma Type Subject (No. of Exams)
Traditional English (1), Math (3), Science (2), Social Studies (2), Foreign Language (1)
Pathway English (1), Math (3), Science (2), Social Studies (1), Foreign Language (1), Student Choice (1)
STEM Math English (1), Math (4), Science (2), Social Studies (1), Foreign Language (1)
STEM Science English (1), Math (3), Science (3), Social Studies (1), Foreign Language (1)

Students can add further designations to their Advanced Regents Diploma by meeting these standards:

Advanced Diploma with Honors

Students working toward an Advanced Designation can receive their diploma with Honors by achieving scores of 90 or higher on all Regents exams in the combination they're pursuing.

Advanced Diploma with a Mastery in Math and/or Mastery in Science

Students taking at least three mathematics exams or three science exams can receive an Advanced Diploma with a Mastery in Math or Mastery in Science if they score 85 or higher on tests in these subject areas.
