How Does the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test Work?

This test is referred to as the AFOQT, and like the SAT, will indicate your verbal and math skills. The results of the test show your eligibility for training like the Air Force Reserve Training Corps (ROTC) and the officer training program, as well as positions like a pilot or air battle manager. You must take the AFOQT if you are enrolled in the Professional Officer Course or receive financial assistance.

Can I Apply for AFOQT Accommodations?

The Air Force does not offer accommodations on the AFOQT. However, you will have the opportunity to take the test more than once. If you fail on the first try, you can take the AFOQT again after 150 days. In addition, you may be able to take the test a third time. You will need to request a testing waiver, which involves meeting one of the following requirements:

  • Completed a college class on material applicable to the AFOQT
  • Enhanced skills that are tested on the AFOQT
  • Logged applicable flight practice

You can request a waiver via the Air Force Personnel Center Testing office. The office can be reached via phone at 210-565-4221 or email at afpc.testing@us.af.mil. If your waiver request is approved, you will need to wait 150 days before taking the test a third time. It is important to note that although you can take the test more than once, the score on your most recent attempt is the one considered for qualification.

Options to Prepare for the AFOQT

Since accommodations are not provided for the AFOQT, you will want to be well prepared for it. There are 550 questions on the AFOQT. Material on the test is divided into the following twelve subtests:

  • Word Knowledge
  • Math Knowledge
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Situational Judgement
  • Verbal Analogies
  • Arithmetic Reasoning
  • Physical Science
  • Table Reading
  • Block Counting
  • Instrumental Comprehension
  • Aviation Information
  • Self-Description Inventory

It is estimated that it will take you five hours to complete the test. Familiarizing yourself with the AFOQT format and taking practice tests will help ensure you are ready for it.

Study.com

There are many options when it comes to online test prep materials. Study.com offers a comprehensive study guide as well as a practice AFOQT. Both of these materials are on-demand and allow you to determine which areas you need to improve in.

Since the AFOQT tests your verbal and math skills, test prep materials for the ACT and SAT may be helpful. Study.com also offers resources for the ACT and SAT.

Official Air Force AFOQT Prep Materials

Another option to prepare for the AFOQT is via the Air Force Personnel Center website. The available resources are offered at no cost and include an overview of the test, a preparatory course, and items to help with the table reading section of the test. As per official Air Force rules, these resources are only to be used for independent study and not study groups.
