Arizona Science Standards for 3rd Grade

Instructor: Shelby Golden
Learn about Arizona's science standards for 3rd graders with this article. You'll be able to find out what students will learn in this grade. You'll also get information about complementary educational tools students can use with these standards.

3rd Grade Science Standards

Arizona uses the following six strands in its science standards:

  • Inquiry Process
  • History and Nature of Science
  • Science in Personal and Social Perspectives
  • Life Science
  • Physical Science
  • Earth and Space Science

Strands 1-3 deal with scientific skills that students will develop at this grade. These skills will be taught and applied as students study strands 4-6, ensuring they gain a well-balanced foundation of scientific knowledge that can be built upon as students move on to higher grade levels.

Inquiry Process Standards

Students will come up with scientific questions and predict what an investigation will reveal. They will also practice safe scientific procedures, complete an investigation, use measurements and accurately record and organize data. Students will compare results from different investigations and come up with additional questions to consider. They will use proper terminology, communicate evidence and clearly describe their scientific work so others can duplicate it.

History and Nature of Science Standards

In this grade, kids will study scientific careers. They will also learn about components of a system.

Science in Personal and Social Perspectives Standards

Circumstances that affect human populations will be considered, along with factors that affect the environment. Students will focus on tools, technologies and technological solutions.

Kids can work on these lessons about science basics to improve their understanding of these scientific processes. They'll be able to review the scientific method, as well as important scientific terms and the measurements they should be familiar with in this grade. There are scientific experts available to answer any questions that students have as they work on these lessons.

Life Science Standards

Working on life science allows students to study plant structures, as well as the life cycle of plants. They will also learn about the parts of an ecosystem, in addition to the relationships of various living things in an ecosystem. Plant and animal adaptations will be discussed. Studying these lessons on plant facts, environmental science and animal facts provide a great way for students to supplement what they're learning in class. Kids can go over ecosystems, the parts of a plant, how plants grow, their reproductive cycle, the life cycle of various animals, their habitats, adaptations and more.

Physical Science Standards

The properties of light will be covered at this grade level. Students will also study vibration and pitch in relation to sound. These online physics lessons offer kids the chance to review aspects of physical science whenever it is best for them. Lessons on the properties of light, reflection, refraction, laws of motion and so much more can be accessed from any computer, making studying easier for students.

Earth and Space Science Standards

3rd graders will learn about the layers of the Earth. They'll also study and classify different types of rocks. Kids will discover how fossils came to be. Human use of Earth's resources will also be discussed. Students can explore the characteristics of different kinds of rocks and other facts about Earth with these geology lessons. Kids can test their grasp of what they're studying by completing the interactive quizzes that accompany each lesson.
