4th Grade Science Standards in Arizona

There are 6 strands of science standards used in Arizona for 4th grade. Strands 1-3 deal with the scientific abilities that students will work on developing in this grade. These first 3 strands are incorporated within strands 4-6, which focus on content standards, allowing students to work on growing their scientific understanding throughout the year.

Students will work on these strands:

1: Inquiry Process

This strand allows students to study inferences, observations, relevant questions and predictions to develop skills for finding information. Students will also work on safety, planning investigations, carrying out investigations, using tools and recording data. Kids will consider data to come up with conclusions and work on formulating new questions based on their findings. Finally, they will communicate with groups and individuals and learn to use graphics for communication.

2: History and Nature of Science

In this grade, students will learn about the roles different people have had in relation to scientific progress. Time will also be spent considering careers in the sciences. Students will work to understand the importance of experiments, in addition to learning about system components and how scientists come up with ideas.

3: Science in Personal and Social Perspectives

Kids will consider how different events affect the environment, as well as rapid and slow-moving environmental events. Technological improvements and benefits will also be discussed in class.

Brushing up on the skills covered by these scientific inquiry and skill strands is easy with these lessons on science basics. Students can go over the scientific method, safety tips and learn more about scientific reasoning with these short, fun lessons. They can even contact science experts if they need assistance.

4: Life Science

Studying life science in the 4th grade will allow students to learn about plant and animal structures. They'll also focus on the classification of animals. Kids will be taught about different kinds of resources, how they are used, and options for various resource conservation. Inherited traits and useful adaptations will also be covered.

These online lessons on plants and animals can help students review what they're learning about living organisms in class. Students can also access this lesson on natural resources.

5: Physical Science

Students will focus on electricity and the possible effects created by electrical circuits. They'll consider different kinds of circuits, conductors, insulators and the characteristics of magnets.

Checking out these lessons on physics will allow students to make sure they understand the forces of electricity and magnetism. These short lessons break these concepts down and make them easy to understand, giving kids the study help they need.

6: Earth and Space Science

In this grade, students will learn about the processes associated with erosion, including currents and wind. They'll also study processes that involve water, along with earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, wind and weathering. Changes in environmental and atmospheric conditions will also be covered. Kids will focus on sources of water, including where water is found on Earth. Weather topics, including climate, weather maps and how weather conditions can vary from one location to another will also be covered in 4th grade.

Kids can work on these geology and weather lessons if they need extra help learning about types of weather and the processes that change the Earth's surface.
