Science Standards for 6th Grade in Arizona

Arizona has divided the science standards for 6th graders into the following distinct but complimentary strands:

  • 1: Inquiry Process
  • 2: History and Nature of Science
  • 3: Science in Personal and Social Perspectives
  • 4: Life Science
  • 5: Physical Science
  • 6: Earth and Space Science

Strands 1-3 deal with scientific skills and will be taught while students are studying Strands 4-6. Each strand includes individual standards, detailed below.

Inquiry Process Standards

Students will study the connection between questions and hypothesis. They will also learn about predictions and work on finding research material. Kids will learn about lab safety and will also design and conduct an experiment and investigation. They will take measurements and keep accurate records. Students will consider data, work on an argument, demonstrate an understanding of graphs and develop additional questions after they've finished an investigation. Kids will also work on verbal and written communication skills in order to represent data accurately.

History and Nature of Science Standards

In this grade, students will examine the importance of major scientific breakthroughs. They will explore how technology is used and work on understanding the ongoing nature of science. They will also explore various scientific processes, such as inferring or classifying.

Science in Personal and Social Perspectives Standards

6th graders will learn about natural hazards and disasters. They will learn how to deal with these kinds of problems and compare solutions before making a decision. Kids will also explore scientific discoveries that involve technology.

Life Science Standards

Working on life science will allow students to study water, cellular structures and the functions of cell parts. They will learn how animal and plant cells are different. The functions of body systems will also be covered, along with how different systems work in tandem with one another. Students will also explore the importance of sunlight and consider different environmental conditions.

This online life science course was designed to help middle schoolers study the parts of cells and different anatomical systems. Kids can access these short lessons from their personal computers, allowing them to study this information whenever is best for them. These lessons can be viewed multiple times, allowing students to ensure they fully grasp what they're studying.

Physical Science Standards

Kids will focus on electrical and thermal energy in this grade. They will also consider energy storage, transformation and transfer.

Checking out these middle school lessons on energy, which allows students to review what they're learning about energy, power and momentum. Kids can work at their own pace and get in contact with physics experts if they have any questions about these lessons.

Earth and Space Science Standards

In this grade, students will learn about the properties and composition of:

  • The atmosphere
  • Rivers
  • Lakes
  • Oceans

They will also learn how scientist research these various Earth structures. Students will study the water cycle and the distribution of water on Earth. Water's effects on climate will also be discussed. Additionally, 6th graders will work on understanding weather systems and local weather.

Completing this earth science course can help students go over the effects of weather, supplementing their in-class work. They can review important information about water and complete interactive quizzes to check their understanding of these topics.
