1st Grade Science Standards in Arkansas

Arkansas adopted new science standards for elementary school for the 2016-2017 school year. These standards are based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The change was made to help ensure students receive a balanced and effective scientific education throughout their schooling. These standards are comprised of three main areas:

1st Grade Disciplinary Core Ideas

Disciplinary core ideas cover the scientific knowledge that students will be learning in class. The core ideas for 1st grade deal with:

Physical Science

Students learn about the connection between sound and vibration. They'll also study the reason why we need light in order to see and investigate evidence of light's ability to travel.

It's easy to give students extra help with this subject through these online physics lessons. Students will be able to go over the properties of light at their own pace. If they need assistance understanding this scientific subject, they can get in contact with physics experts for help.

Life Science

1st graders study the functions of the external parts of living organisms, including plants and animals. Students also discuss what behaviors are used by parents to ensure that their offspring grow and thrive.

These lessons on plants and animals can help students review the differences and similarities between different kinds of living creatures.

Earth and Space Science

In this grade, students learn about the celestial objects they can view in the sky. They'll also focus on the movements of these objects.

Checking out these astronomy lessons can help students go over information about our sun, the planets in our solar system and even the moon. Interactive quizzes are included with these lessons, allowing students to check their progress before they move on in their studies.

Engineering Design

Students work to understand how engineering problems are defined. They'll try to come up with multiple solutions to the problems they face and learn how to test these solutions in order to determine which option best suits their needs.

Kids can get familiar with the basics of engineering with this lesson on mechanical engineering.

1st Grade Science and Engineering Practices

These practices lay out the specific abilities that students will develop in 1st grade. Over the course of the school year, students will have the chance to plan and complete a scientific investigation. They'll also spend time considering data and working to come up with scientific explanations for their experiment outcomes. Students learn to research or otherwise acquire information and then communicate what they have learned.

Proficiency with scientific skills comes with practice. Students can work on improving their abilities by completing these lessons on science basics.

1st Grade Crosscutting Concepts

Crosscutting concepts are key ideas that can be applied in multiple grade levels and while studying various scientific subjects. These concepts are interwoven with the information students are learning in class and include the relationships between cause and effect, the connections between structure and function and the appearance of patterns in nature. Class time is also devoted to helping students understand how the world is changed by science, technology and engineering.
