GRE Test Score Averages
GRE score information from the ETS (Educational Testing Service) was released in 2015 for individuals who took the exam between August 1, 2011 and June 30, 2014. Listed below is the overall average score for each exam section. Averages according to test takers' intended graduate major are also included:
|Intended Field of Study||Verbal Reasoning||Quantitative Reasoning||Analytical Writing|
|Arts & Humanities||157||150||4.1|
The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections are both scored on a scale of 130-170 points, while the Analytical Writing section receives a score of 0-6 points.
In addition to average scores, it might help to understand where you fall in terms of your percentile, which is based on the performance of all test takers. The data provided by ETS can be used to compare how you did in the overall scheme.
|Verbal Reasoning Score Ranges||Quantitative Reasoning Score Ranges||Analytical Writing Score Ranges|
|Lower than 25th percentile||144 and below||145 and below||3.0 and below|
|25th-75th percentile||Scores ranged from 145-157||146-159||3.5-4.0|
|Above the 75th percentile||158-170||160-170||4.5-6.0|
An immediate readout of your verbal and quantitative scores will be available once you finish the computer-based version of the GRE. You will have the option of canceling your scores if you feel you didn't perform well enough to gain admission to your graduate program of choice.
If you decide to accept your test results, your official score report will be available around two weeks later. In addition to results for the Analytical Writing section, this report will contain percentile information for each portion of the test.
