All About Me Books

All about me books are designed to celebrate the individual child and what makes us all unique. Reading aloud is a fantastic way to introduce these books to children. To learn more about the importance of reading aloud to students, take a look at this lesson on supporting emergent literacy through read alouds. You will find brief descriptions of some all about me books below:

  • ABC I Like Me by Nancy Carlson - This is a beginning reader book for ages 3-6. In this story, students will follow the characters through identifying positive traits about themselves using the alphabet.
  • Happy to Be Nappy by Bell Hooks - This book is for ages 3-6 and is a beginning reader level. This story celebrates little girls who really love themselves, different hair and all.
  • Paul Needs Specs by Bernard Cohen and Geoff Kelly - A beginning reader level book for ages 3-6, Paul Needs Specs is a story about a little boy who is very confused by the world around him because he cannot see well. The story is told through the eyes of Paul's sister who discovers that her brother needs glasses, bringing his world back into focus and restoring his confidence.
  • No David! by David Shannon - This book is about a little boy who spends the entire story getting into trouble and begins to feel sad about always being told no and corrected by his mother, only to realize that she loves him completely, no matter how many mistakes he may make.
  • Feelings by Aliki - As the name implies, this book addresses the feelings we all experience at some point in time and how these feelings can vary from person to person.

All About Me Lessons

You can use these books in all about me lessons, which are fun and exciting for students. You can also let your students create their own all about me books as a part of a lesson. This can give children the chance to tell the whole class about themselves and what's important to them. To learn more about how to incorporate them into your classroom activities and get other tips for introducing students to their peers, check out this lesson outlining activities for the first day of kindergarten.
