Broward County Adult Education

While most are aware of Broward County's beaches, golfing, and water sports, they may not realize the wealth of adult basic and continuing educational programs offered by schools, colleges, and libraries. Adult learners seeking flexibility will also find a variety of online courses available to suit their needs. Here, we highlight some of the many programs and services available.

Broward Community Schools

Broward Community Schools (browardcommunityschools.com), the adult education arm of Broward County Public Schools, offers classes at nearly 60 locations throughout the county and online. Areas of instruction are outlined below:

  • Professional development courses focus on career and technical skills, computer applications, and entrepreneurship. Class topics include business, finance, and medical billing and coding.
  • Personal enrichment classes provide instruction in such areas as cooking, dance, photography, and art.
  • Basic education classes include GED test prep courses and a high school diploma completion program.
  • ESL classes stress the practical language skills adults need for the workplace and day-to-day life in Broward County. Courses are offered at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels and cover English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

Broward County Library

Broward County Library (broward.org) offers several literacy and basic language-learning programs for adults at library branches throughout the county.

  • Each One, Teach One is a literacy program in which trained volunteers tutor other adults. The program usually takes about 24 months to complete and is offered at all of the library's branches.
  • Crossroads Café and English Café are programs that improve the language and conversational skills of intermediate-level English speakers. These programs' classroom courses and instructional materials (DVDs and texts) are offered at over 20 branches of the library system.
  • Literacy Help Centers are located at nine library branches. These centers provide access to literacy coordinators along with computers and technological training.
  • Citizenship classes are available at 13 branches. Instruction offers immigrants guidance through the citizenship process along with citizenship test prep, study aids, and sample citizenship exam questions.
  • Spanish language and conversational classes, available at 10 libraries, are offered to adults wishing to learn Spanish.

Broward College

Broward College (broward.edu) offers adult learners personal and professional development courses and training through its continuing education department. Courses include:

  • Professional certification training covers such areas as bookkeeping, marketing design, computer software, and food safety management.
  • Professional development courses can be found in areas including project management, marketing, human resources, education, writing, and finance.
  • Creative pursuits, such as photography, music, and culinary arts, can be studied through the school's Creative Arts Center.

Online Courses for Adult Learners in Broward County
