The Cost of the California Real Estate Exam
To be a licensed real estate salesperson or broker in the state of California, candidates must schedule and take a real estate exam, among other requirements. The fee for the exam is $60 for a salesperson and $95 for a broker. These fees may be applied to a Discover, Visa, MasterCard, or American Express credit card, or paid for by check or money order. All exam fees are nonrefundable.
Those are the costs for the initial scheduling of the exam. If you need to reschedule your exam, that will require an additional cost of $15 for a salesperson, and $20 for a broker for the first rescheduled exam. Each subsequently rescheduled exam carries a fee of $30 (the same for both salespersons and brokers).
If a candidate fails to pass the exam, they can apply to retake it. This generally will require another exam fee, however, equal to the original cost of $65 for a salesperson and $95 for a broker.
Throughout the process of earning a California real estate license, the exam fee is not the only cost that candidates will be responsible for paying.
Candidates must also pay a real estate license application fee. This fee is $245 for a salesperson and $300 for a broker. In addition, candidates may have to pay a processing fee for electronic fingerprinting, used for criminal background investigations. This fee is $49.
Aside from these, there may be other miscellaneous fees that are unique to your specific exam, testing center, or county in California. Please review all local guidelines to see if any of these apply to you.
Test Prep Courses
The final substantial cost that candidates should expect is the fee to register for a real estate exam test prep course. These courses might be helpful to candidates as they study and prepare for their exam. These courses could provide expert guidance and support to test takers. There are several companies that offer courses and workbooks. They can range in cost from approximately $24-$450 or more, depending on the company and the packages and services they provide.
