Being Prepared for Your CBEST Test Day
Being prepared for the CBEST not only involves studying for the test, but it also means you should be familiar with the test's regulations. Following some simple strategies can help you ensure that you are ready to take your test on test day.
What You Need on Test Day
Every person taking a CBEST test must be able to show ID that meets the identification requirements. It must be a government-issued ID, and your registration name must match the name on the ID. Accepted forms of ID include a driver's license, passport and state ID, to name a few. A full list of all the ID requirements is provided on the CTC website.
Paper-Based Testing Items
If you're taking the paper-based version of the test, you are also expected to bring an admission ticket that you received during registration. Sharpened number 2 pencils are also required; you will only have access to the pencils you bring on test day since test sites do not provide pencils.
What Isn't Allowed at Test Sites
There are a number of items that cannot be brought into the CBEST testing area. These items include:
A full list is provided on the CTC website. In some cases, those taking a paper-based test may be allowed to bring a water bottle into the testing area. The bottle must be clear and label-free.
Know When To Arrive and What To Wear
Computer-based test-takers are asked to plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before the test is scheduled to start. Paper-based test-takers are required to arrive at the time indicated on the admission ticket. It's a good idea to locate your test site ahead of time and travel there so that you are familiar with the route and know where to find parking if you plan to drive to the site on test day.
Since temperatures at test sites can vary, you are advised to wear layers. This way you can adjust if you're too warm or too cold. Test-takers are also asked to wear soft-soled shoes to minimize noise levels in the test room.
Know What To Expect When Testing
The test site rules and expectations when testing are provided on the CTC website. Individuals should familiarize themselves with testing policies so that they do not unintentionally break test site rules.
You'll receive appropriate materials and directions before you start taking the test. The materials will include a booklet and pen that can be used to make manual calculations or work out responses before answering on the computer or paper-based test. You must also sign a test center rules document indicating that you know the rules for the site and will comply with them.
Bathroom breaks are permitted during the test period. When you take a bathroom break for the computer-based test, you'll have to have your ID or palm scanned both when leaving and returning to the testing area.
When You Can Leave
You do not need to wait until the end of the test period to leave. Anyone who has finished their test can be excused once test site staff has gathered their test materials.
Computer-Based Testing Tutorial
This resource is provided on the CTC website and can be used to familiarize yourself with how computer-based testing systems work. It is a good idea to take the tutorial before test day so that you are as comfortable as possible with the test system. This way, using a computerized test will not adversely impact your performance.
Know About Your Test
You will be better prepared if you have a clear understanding of the focus of the test and have the skills and knowledge needed for the test.
The CTC website has a link to a document called the CBEST Test Specifications. This document outlines the key content areas on each CBEST subtest and provides some examples of the types of tasks individuals may need to perform or questions they may need to answer for each content area.
