What Is the CGAP?

CGAP stands for Certified Government Auditing Professional. The CGAP is a certification offered by IIA, or the Institute of Internal Auditors. At this point, the CGAP certification is being phased out. No new applicants are being accepted into the program.

However, certification is still being awarded to any applicant who was approved for the program prior to December 2018. To receive certification, they must complete all CGAP requirements by December 31 of 2020.

Registering for the CGAP Exam

Registration for the CGAP exam is only available to candidates who have already been accepted into the certification program. To register, they must log into their account on the IIA Certification Candidate Management System and select a testing appointment.

Before registering, candidates consider whether they will be able to meet the CGAP certification experience requirements by the December 2020 deadline. These include up to 60 months of experience for applicants with only an associate degree.

What Is Replacing the CGAP?

The CGAP will be replaced with an assessment-based certificate program. Prospective internal auditors will take part in a certificate program that includes an exam based on the curriculum. Those who pass the exam will receive a certificate.

Currently CGAP-certified individuals can keep up their certification by meeting continuous professional education requirements.
