Claiming a Tax Deduction for Your Study.com Teacher Edition

Instructor: Daniel Brown
Did you know that it is possible to make your Study.com Teacher Edition tax deductible as an educator expense deduction?

Claiming a Tax Deduction

The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act removed some deductions for teachers. However, the educator expense deduction still allows teachers to deduct up to $250 for purchases of 'professional development courses, books, supplies, computer equipment (including related software and services), other equipment, and supplementary materials that you use in the classroom' (IRS.gov).

Qualifying Conditions

In order to qualify for the educator expense deduction, you must:

  • Be a K-12 school teacher, instructor, counselor, principal or aide and
  • Have worked at least 900 hours in the school year in a school that provides elementary or secondary education as determined under state law

You may not deduct expenses if you have already received reimbursement for them. If you are a teacher who is married to another teacher, you can claim up to $250 each.

How to Claim

You can make your claim for the educator expense deduction on line 23 of Form 1040 or line 16 of Form 1040A. You can not claim the deduction on form 1040EZ.
