Science Standards for 1st Grade

Science standards in Colorado are set up to ensure students graduate with a firm understanding of scientific principles. Students will build on what they learn from year to year. 1st graders in Colorado will have the chance to learn about the following subjects:

Physical Science

Kids in 1st grade will study the properties of solids and liquids. They'll also learn about the classification of solids and liquids. These chemistry lessons for kids can help students go over this subject. These lessons are short and designed to help younger students stay focused on the concepts they're learning about.

Life Science

The ways that both plant and animal parents and offspring are similar and different will be considered at this grade. Students will learn about the classification of organisms, the needs of living things and the characteristics of various organisms. Students in this grade can finds out more about plants and animals with these fun lessons. If they need help understanding a specific organisms they can reach out to science experts to get the answers they need.

Earth Systems Science

In this grade, students will learn about different Earth materials. They'll study different kinds of soil and focus on the importance of recycling. Working on these geology lessons can help kids absorb more facts about materials found on Earth. They can focus on recycling and other forms of conservation with these lessons on environmental science. Because these lessons are self-paced it's easy for students to take their time and dig into these subjects.

21st Century Skills and Readiness Competencies in Science for 1st Grade

Throughout their schooling, students in Colorado will work on developing scientific skills and competencies. 1st graders are building the foundation for these skills, and students will continue to improve their abilities as they grow. They'll be focusing on skills in these areas:

  • Information literacy
  • Critical thinking and reasoning
  • Self-direction
  • Collaboration
  • Invention

1st graders will work to master these abilities by learning to share what they find in experiments with others. They'll also learn about the importance of observations and how to ask questions, carry out experiments and predict outcomes. Students will work with data, charts and illustrations. Practicing these skills is not limited to a specific area of science, instead, students will work to apply their scientific abilities throughout the school year.

Science basics are covered by these online lessons. Students can study this information whenever they want and review the lessons as many times as they want. They can check their understanding of the scientific process and importance of reasoning by working on short quizzes. Students will also be able to learn about important science terms and the measurements used by scientists.

Student understanding will be checked with inquiry questions throughout the school year that help direct student assessment in each of the major science subjects. Additionally, students will be able to understand the importance of what they're learning by considering the real-world applications of the information provided in science class.
