Maryland Common Core Standards

In 2010, Maryland adopted Common Core Standards for English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics. These standards present the educational requirements for students in grades K through 12 to ensure that they will be prepared for the workforce and college. The standards for English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics are grouped in the following ways:

  • Grades K-8: separate standards exist for each grade
  • Grades 9-12: a group of standards for grades 9-10 and a group of standards for grades 11-12

By the end of each grade level or group of grade levels, students should be able to demonstrate that they understand and know how to apply what they have learned.

Maryland Assessment Methods

Each state decides what teaching materials will be used and what methods will be implemented to support students during the learning process. Maryland's assessment system uses the following question formats to evaluate the abilities of high and low performing students:

  • Short answer questions
  • Open response questions
  • Multiple choice questions

  • Increasing knowledge of content in science, social studies and technical subjects using literature, non-fiction and informational texts
  • Completing reading, writing and speaking exercises based on evidence from texts
