Community Helpers Lesson Plan

Use this lesson to teach your students about the community helpers. Then help them structure a memoir scenario using community members as a theme.

Learning Objectives

Preparing to Write

  • Read our lesson What Are Community Members? with your students.
  • As you read, create a chart that lists the community members.
  • Discuss and define words such as 'wellbeing' and 'assist.'
  • Define 'community' and have students briefly discuss with a partner:
    • Who are members of your community?
    • How do they help you and your family?
  • Share ideas and thoughts with the group, checking for understanding.
  • Refer back to the portion of the lesson that focuses on Jack and his family. Re-read with your students, creating a web as you read.
  • With your students, identify the central idea or problem for Jack (the house caught on fire) and write it in the center of the web.
  • Next, have students contribute different community members and how they helped. Write these branches coming out from the web center.
  • Demonstrate how to use web branches to list main ideas and further branches to fill in detail. Show students how to organize thinking in this way.


  • Divide students into pairs and have them revisit their earlier thoughts of community members with their partner, deciding on one story they'd like to tell.
  • When ready, send students to a writing spot to create a story web, focusing on the problem the community helped to solve as the center and using branches to fill in detail.
  • Circulate the room to check for understanding.
  • After writing is complete, have students share ideas as a group.
  • Tell students they will use these webs to create a community helper memoir next class.


  • Partner students with 'buddies' from a younger grade. Have them be community helpers by visiting them often, reading with the younger buddies and teaching them things like how to tie shoes.
  • Develop the short memoir into a longer piece, building on ideas and branching themes.
  • Host a 'Community Helpers' day, inviting parents and local community members to your class to share their careers.
