A curriculum vitae, or CV, is similar to a resume and is typically used when seeking employment. Learn about the information you should include in your CV and find additional resources for creating other useful professional documents.

Curriculum Vitae Outline

CVs are most commonly used when applying for higher-level positions and/or international jobs. While comparable to resumes, CVs typically include more detailed information to provide a comprehensive overview of your past education, experience, recognitions and professional affiliations. As with any supporting document, it is important to highlight your most relevant qualifications and skills that are applicable to the position you're seeking. Below is a general outline of the information that should be included in your CV:

  • Contact Information: The first heading of your CV should include all essential personal information, including first and last name, address, telephone number(s) and email address.
  • Educational Background: Next, you should list any degrees you've obtained with the most recent listed first. Be sure to include the name of the institutions you've attended and the year in which you earned each degree.
  • Employment History: This section should begin with your most recent position and include your title, the company's name and the beginning and end dates of employment. Under each listing, provide an overview of the roles and responsibilities you had in that position.
  • Professional Training: If you have any additional training beyond what's stated in the educational background section, list it here. This can include professional seminars, workshops, conferences and any relevant licenses or certifications.
  • Research and/or Dissertation: This heading should include research experience and interests relevant to the position you're applying for and/or an overview of your dissertation.
  • Graduate Fieldwork, Teaching Experience or Fellowships: Include any applicable information about the fieldwork you've conducted or any relevant teaching experience or fellowships held. If two or more of these apply, create an individual header for each.
  • Published Works: List the title and corresponding publication of any published work, along with the dates of publication.
  • Presentations or Lectures: Include any professional presentations or lectures you've conducted with the corresponding topics, locations and dates.
  • Awards/Recognitions: Provide information on any notable awards or professional recognitions you've received.
  • Language and Technical Skills: Include specific software programs, applications and equipment you're proficient with, as well as any additional languages in which you are fluent.
  • Professional Memberships: Describe all the professional organizations you are involved with and any relevant memberships or affiliations.
  • Personal Interests or Hobbies: While optional, you can include any hobbies or interests you maintain outside of work. If possible, include any which may also be applicable to the position or illustrate leadership or community involvement.

When applying for upper-level positions, you may also be asked to submit other documents in addition to your CV. These can include cover letters, letters of reference and, if offered the position, an acceptance or refusal letter.
