Whether you want to pick up a new hobby, develop your professional skills, learn the English language, or earn your high school diploma, you will find many adult education courses and programs to meet your needs in Des Moines. Read on to learn about the different options available.

Des Moines Area Community College (DMCC)

DMCC offers courses and training for adults looking to earn their high school diplomas, improve life- and career-readiness skills, master basic academic subjects, and learn the English language.

Adult Education and Literacy Programs

  • DMCC's Adult Literacy Program provides free individual tutoring to adults who need help mastering basic math, reading, and writing skills. This service is available at schools and community organizations throughout the Des Moines area.
  • ESL courses are available in a non-credit capacity for beginner and intermediate-level English language learners. ESL students who work their way up through high-intermediate courses can then take advanced courses in grammar, writing, and multicultural literacy for DMCC credit.
  • HiSET preparation courses are available at 10 sites to help students earn their high school equivalency diplomas. Prep courses cover the math, social studies, science, writing, literature, and arts topics that are included on the HiSET tests. These classes include skills evaluations, instruction, and practice tests.

Continuing Education Courses

DMCC's continuing education department provides courses and programs in a variety of areas for adults who would like to improve their career skills, meet licensure requirements, or enrich their personal lives. Offerings include:

  • Individual courses cover computers, manufacturing and industrial technology, healthcare, business, and creative pursuits, such as photography and music.
  • Courses designed to meet licensure and license renewal requirements are available to real estate, insurance, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical professionals as well as cosmetologists and auto dealers.
  • Certificate programs are offered in the areas of building maintenance and construction, healthcare, business, manufacturing, industrial maintenance, industrial painting, welding, and sports and recreation.

Des Moines Public Schools

The Community Education arm of Des Moines Public Schools offers adult educational programs and classes that are primarily designed for personal enrichment. Classes are offered in subjects such as:

  • Personal finance
  • Home and garden
  • Photography
  • Dance
  • Exercise and fitness

Des Moines Art Center

From one-day seminars to three-month courses, the Des Moines Art Center offers dozens of classes for adults looking to learn or improve their artistic skills and knowledge. Courses include:

  • Digital photography
  • Photoshop
  • Painting in oil, acrylic, and watercolor
  • Drawing
  • Pottery and ceramics
  • Jewelry making
  • Letterpress printing

Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

For adults interested in botanical arts, the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden offers a variety of resources, including multi- and single-day classes and an annual symposium. Classes cover a range of topics including:
