Inspirational Quotes

Perhaps the most inspirational work by Dr. Seuss is 1990's Oh, The Places You'll Go! This was the last Dr. Seuss book to come out during his lifetime. The story is full of inspirational quotes for people starting new journeys, from students graduating from school to those embarking on new careers.

Kid, you

The motivational text begins by building up the reader:

You have brains in your head.

You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself

any direction you choose.

Near the end of the book, Dr. Seuss sums up the sentiment of the book with the line: Kid, you'll move mountains!

Oh, The Places You'll Go! is a popular graduation gift. For those trying to find a college, a college planning course can be a big help. Students about to start college may need assistance choosing a major and a career. Those ready to find a new career can get help too.

Social Justice Quotes

Many Dr. Seuss stories tackle issues of social justice. 1954's Horton Hears a Who! features the line: A person's a person, no matter how small.

The Lorax, from 1971, tackles issues of environmentalism. The title character says:

I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees.

I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues.

You have brains in your head.

In 1958's Yertle the Turtle, Seuss encapsulates the feeling of those at the bottom of society:

I know up on top you are seeing great sights,

But down here on the bottom,

We too should have rights.

Many of these topics are central to the study of sociology.

Commonly Misquoted

'Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.' This quote has often been attributed to Dr. Seuss, but it's not from any of his published works and there doesn't seem to be evidence that he ever said it.
