What is the DSST exam?
DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSSTs) are exams traditionally offered to military personnel, but are now open to civilians as well, that allow students to earn college credit. They are similar to CLEP exams in this regard, but the structure and offerings differ slightly. DSST exams cover a range of undergraduate-level courses. DSST exams are considered a prior learning assessment in which you can test your knowledge of specific subject matter without actually taking the corresponding college-level course. - Note: Introduction to Geography (formerly titled: Human/Cultural Geography) was rewritten and contains new content as of July 30, 2018. Also, as of that same date, Introduction to Geology joins the list of exams.
How Do I Register for a DSST Test?
Both the DSST website (www.getcollegecredit.com) and the Prometric website provide a searchable database of approved schools and institutions that administer DSST exams. You can also contact local schools within your area to find out if they offer the exams. Some testing sites allow you to schedule the exam online through their website, listing the dates and times available. Others require you to contact the school directly to set up an appointment to take the test. A few locations offer walk-in days in addition to their regularly scheduled exam days. Each DSST exam is $85, which must be paid in addition to any administrative fees charged by the testing site.
What is a DANTES Test?
Defense Activity for Non-traditional Education Support (DANTES) funds the first time of testing for DSST for eligible military and spouses. As of 2010, test retakes are not funded by DANTES. There is also a limited DANTES test list that can be taken at a Prometric testing center if you are military. These include:
- Principles of Supervision
- Computing and Information Technology
- Ethics in America, Health & Human Development
- Introduction to Business

How Do I Transfer My DSST Exam Credits?
Each academic institution may have a different policy on accepting transfer credits and/or 'credits for prior learning.' If you plan to pursue a college degree or use a DSST exam to meet the prerequisite for a higher level course, check with the college or university you wish to attend and the specific degree program to verify their acceptance of prior learning assessment credits. You can order official DSST transcripts by filling out the order form on the DSST website and having them sent to you and/or your school.
