Where Do I Take a DSST Exam?

DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) are offered by two types of locations: fully-funded and non-funded. Fully-funded locations can be found on military bases or on college campuses that allow DANTES to pay any fees. Non-funded locations are set up on campuses that do not accept payment or reimbursement from DANTES.

You can find both funded and non-funded locations in your area through the DSST website (getcollegecredit.com). You can narrow your search to centers that are completely funded. You can also use the search tool to select only schools that give you credit for DSST exams. If you do want to receive credit for the exam, you should double-check that the school you want to attend offers credit for the specific exam you're going to complete.

Some testing locations only offer paper-based exams, while others deliver the tests over the internet. Make sure you select the testing option that works best for you before you register.

Keep in mind that different testing centers require you to register for these exams in different ways. Contact the institution where you plan to test and find out if they have any special requirements before you register. You may need to sign up in advance, or they may expect you to walk in.

Who Can Take a DSST Exam?

DSST exams were originally designed for military personnel and their spouses, but other people can complete the tests. Many home-schooled and high school students, as well as students currently enrolled in college and adult learners (including veterans), choose to use the DSST exams to test out of various courses, as these assessments are generally far less expensive than college courses, and are widely accepted at various educational institutions.

What Does the DSST Test?

There are DSST exams available for major subjects like business, humanities, math, physical science, social sciences and technology. Most tests are in either business or social sciences, but there are multiple exams in each category. You can explore your specific options on the DSST website, to find out if they offer an exam that will work for your educational needs.

How Can I Get Ready for DSST Exams?

Preparation options vary for members of the armed services and civilians. However, the DSST website offers study guides and practice exams for both groups. Checking them out will give you a better idea of the kinds of questions you'll face on the exams.

Completing an online prep course can also help you get ready to obtain the score you need on your tests. Study.com offers DSST Exam Courses that can help you go over business ethics and mathematics, health, history, geology, astronomy, the physical sciences and more. These courses are full of short video lessons that help you review what you'll need to know on test day.
