ELM Test Dates

Instructor: Shelby Golden
Check out the potential dates you can take the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) tests required for enrollment at California State University (CSU). You can also explore study options to help you get prepared for the exam.

System-Wide ELM Test Dates

While the ELM test is offered at different times across various campuses in the CSU system, there are three system-wide dates that are used by every location. In 2016, these dates are:

  • February 13th
  • March 19th
  • May 7th

You can find the campus nearest you through the Electronic Testing Service website (www.ets.org).

Additional Dates

There are additional testing times available throughout the year. Some CSU campuses offer more exam dates than others, but if you're willing to travel, you'll be able to find a test date in every month of the year. However, if you test after May 7th, you will not be able to use your scores to enroll in the fall term.

Out-of-State Dates

You can also register to complete this exam if you aren't a California resident but have been accepted to one of the CSU schools. Available test dates fall in the second week of each month, with the exception of May. May test dates must be taken within the first week.

Registration Deadlines and Score Availability

The exact deadlines for when you need to register for your test vary by date and location. Generally, you will need to sign up for an exam about two weeks before your test date if you're taking the exam in California. Some test dates allow you to register within a week of the exam, but you should double-check to make sure you're signed up in time.

If you live out of state, you will need to set up your exam appointment no later than the 15th of the month prior to the one in which you plan on testing.

Most scores should be available within 3-4 weeks of the completion of your exam. Be aware that testing in November and December might result in longer wait times for your scores.

Getting Ready

Once you've selected a test date, you can focus on studying for the ELM exam. Study.com has created an ELM Study Guide that covers the mathematical information you need to review before taking this test. You can brush up on your skills in algebra, geometry and statistics with short video lessons and interactive quizzes. You'll also have the chance to contact math experts if you have any questions as you prepare.

Keep in mind that you may also need to schedule and prepare for CSU's English Placement Test (EPT). Use this EPT Study Guide to refresh your understanding of the language arts concepts covered by this exam so you can get the score you need to get placed in college-level courses.
