ELM Test Registration Information

Learn how to register for California State University's Entry Level Mathematics exam with this article. Make sure you're familiar with each step of the registration process and find out what else you need to do to be ready on test day.

Where Do I Register for the ELM?

Registration for the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) exam is completed through the Electronic Testing Service (ETS) website (www.ets.org/csu). You'll need to set up on online account in order to register. Once this process has been completed, you'll be able to select from among the available test dates and locations.

Please note that this registration system automatically checks information about your scores on other standardized tests if you sent scoring reports to CSU. If you scored highly enough to opt out of the ELM, it will inform you that you are not required to test.

What Does Registration Require?

You'll need to provide your SSN during the registration process. If you are an international student, you can use your taxpayer identification number instead. You will also need to submit payment for the exam. For 2016, the fees are $18 for in-state examinees and an additional $75 for individuals testing out of state.

You'll receive an admission ticket after you complete the registration process. Make sure you print it off and bring it with you to your testing appointment, as it is required to sit for the exam.

When Do I Need to Register?

The earlier you register the more likely you'll be to get the test location and date you want. Most CSU testing centers require you to register no later than two weeks before an exam. If you're registering to complete the ELM out-of-state, you will need to register a full month before you plan to take your test.

You can also attempt to take the test as a walk-in at some testing locations. Contact the campus where you intend to complete the exam to find out if this is an option for you. Keep in mind that even if the campus allows walk-ins, you will not be allowed to take the exam if there isn't a seat available.

You will need to get a Walk-In Registration Form from the test office at your campus and bring it with you if you want to test in this manner. You will also need to bring either a money order or check and a photo ID.

Can I Change My Test Date or Location?

You can use your ETS account to change your testing date or location as long as it's at least two weeks before you're scheduled to test. You may also get a refund of your registration fee if you cancel your testing appointment within this time frame. The additional fee associated with testing out of state is not refundable at any point.
