Florida State Standards for Language Arts

Language arts standards for the state of Florida cover a wide variety of areas in order to ensure that each student is developing a well-rounded understanding of the subject. Read on for a sampling of the standards for kindergarten, elementary, middle and high school.

Summaries of Florida Language Arts Standards

Florida's language arts standards outline developmentally appropriate skills for each grade level; students are expected to be proficient in these standards by the end of the school year. The main areas of focus include speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Kindergarten

Language arts standards for kindergarten outline basic expectations, as students are just starting out. Kindergartners are expected to recognize the features of storybooks and poems. They are also taught to participate in group reading activities and use details from the text and its illustrations to retell a story. Kindergartners begin to express their opinions in writing as well.

Elementary School

Elementary school standards gradually increase in their complexity with each grade level as students become ready to take on more difficult concepts. First graders, for example, continue developing their reading skills as well as their ability to grasp a story's main ideas, while second and third graders begin learning to answer questions about a story's plot, setting and characters.

By the time they reach fourth grade, students should be able to write short narratives and conduct research on a given topic. Their reading comprehension skills should also allow them to pinpoint the evidence an author is using to support his or her main points and identify a story or play's theme.

Fifth graders work on improving the organization of their writing and learn how to contribute to a group discussion. They should also be able to compare events or characters appearing in two texts and analyze the effect of a work's visual elements.

Middle School

Middle school standards place more focus on developing students' writing and analytical skills. Sixth graders, for instance, work on writing well-supported arguments and using technology to publish their writing. They also begin learning to trace plot and character development over the course of a story and draw inferences from a text.

Seventh graders take their analytical skills a bit further by taking such factors into consideration as the author's point of view, the structure of a poem or the meaning of figurative language. They also start writing more in-depth pieces and learn how to cite sources.

By the time they reach eight grade, students should be able to identify the impact a specific event or line of dialogue has on a story's outcome and recognize a literary element's mythical or religious origins. Eighth graders are also able to pick the right media to present their ideas.

High school standards focus on developing the language arts skills students will need either on the job or in college. Students continue learning how to create coherent, well-supported analyses of a text. They consider how elements like structure and the sequencing of key events enhance the overall impact of a work of fiction, while also evaluating arguments presented in an informational text. By the time they graduate, students should be able to determine the strengths and weaknesses of an author's position by examining the use of rhetorical devices as well as tone and point of view, among other elements.
