Fourth Grade South Carolina Science Standards

Instructor: Shelby Golden
Study South Carolina's science standards for 4th graders with this article. You can check out the concepts, core standards and important scientific practices that students focus on in this grade.

4th Grade Science Content Standards

Students will study the following core subjects in the 4th grade:

Weather and Climate - Earth Science

While studying this area of science, students will focus on the water cycle, weather and patterns associated with climate. Students will work on understanding:

  • Atmospheric gases
  • How water changes in the water cycle
  • Weather maps
  • Severe weather
  • Differences in climate between regions

These engaging lessons on weather for elementary school can provide additional resources for students to review what they're learning in class at their own pace.

Stars and the Solar System - Earth Science

The movement and location of stars and other celestial objects will be discussed in this grade. Class time will be spent learning more about the:

  • Order, location and composition of planets in our solar system
  • Apparent movement of constellations and the Sun
  • Uses of astronomical tools in exploration
  • Movement, location and structure of the moon
  • Effect of the Earth's rotation on day and night
  • Changes associated with different seasons

Students can explore this collection of astronomy for elementary school lessons to dig deeper into this subject. The short lessons allow students to easily go over complicated subjects.

Light and Sound Energy - Physical Science

Teachers will help students understand the proprieties of light and sound energy. The following topics will be covered:

  • Colors and white light
  • The relative brightness of light
  • Visibility and light
  • How light interacts with different objects and materials
  • Vibration, pitch and volume
  • Communicating over distance

These kid-appropriate lessons on physics can help students go over the facts they need to know about light and sound. They'll be able to measure their understanding with short interactive quizzes.

Growth and Characteristics of Organisms - Life Science

Students will be able to study the ways that plants and animals live and reproduce. They will learn about:

  • Classification of plants and animals
  • Developmental stages of seed plants
  • The growth of different animals
  • Characteristics that are inherited or shaped by genetics and the environment
  • Animal senses and sense organs
  • Structural adaptations of plants and animals

Kids can use these lessons on animals and plant and fungi facts to study living creatures. They can also get in contact with subject matter experts if they need extra help with the topics they're studying.

4th Grade Core Concepts

The South Carolina Department of Education also strives to ensure students focus on core concepts throughout the school year, allowing them to develop a firm foundation of scientific understanding. These concepts involve the recognition of patterns, the understanding of cause and effect, and the identification of scale and proportion. Students will also be taught the properties of systems, energy, function, and the qualities of both stability and change as they relate to scientific disciplines. These concepts are meant to be contextualized within the content areas provided above.

4th Grade Science and Engineering Practices

Building on the skills that students have developed in lower grade levels, students will also practice the following scientific inquiry skills over the course of this grade:

  • Asking questions that require investigation or help to clarify topics
  • Creating and using models
  • Carrying out scientific investigations
  • Correctly interpreting a wide variety of data
  • Demonstrating an understanding of mathematics
  • Developing scientific explanations and arguments
  • Researching subjects and communicating findings
  • Building objects or thinking up solutions to various problems

Using these lessons on science basics is a great way for students to review these applications of science.
