Free English as a Second Language Courses

English as a second language or ESL programs offer opportunities for those who do not speak English as a first language to not only learn the language, but also understand English culture and society. Many colleges and universities offer free courses to non-native English speakers.

City Colleges of Chicago

City Colleges of Chicago offers free ESL classes that cover basic language as well as advanced skills meant to prepare students for careers. The basic elements of the English language (grammar, reading, speaking, etc.) are integrated into each course. Supplemental classes in writing, career development and conversation are also open to students. This school offers citizenship courses for those who are preparing to take a citizenship exam as well.

Montgomery College - Maryland

Free basic classes are offered to ESL students at Montgomery College, though there is a charge for advanced courses. Students learn the basics of the English language as well as skills to help them function in society. Applicants to these classes take a test to determine which one meets their needs.

Durham Tech

Durham Tech offers free ESL courses to students who do not speak English as their first language. The school has several locations offering these courses and requires that the student be 18 or older to register. Students also need to take a placement exam.
