FTCE Chemistry: Passing Score

Instructor: Bill Sands
The FTCE Chemistry exam uses a unique scoring system to determine a passing score. Keep reading for a detailed description of the minimum passing score, how the test is scored, and what content can be found on the assessment.

Passing the FTCE Chemistry

The FTCE (Florida Teacher Certification Exam) Chemistry 6-12 employs a scaled scoring system to grade candidates. In order to pass the exam, candidates must earn a final scaled score of at least 200.

The FTCE Chemistry Scoring System

The FTCE uses a pass-fail system to grade candidates. Anything below 200 is automatically graded as a failure.

The FTCE uses a scaled scoring system that adjusts a candidate's raw scores to more easily measured numbers. This system is in place so that scores can be compared across multiple forms of a test.

Under this system, passing scores are determined by the percentage of overall questions that a candidate answers correctly. For the chemistry assessment, candidates will need to get 72 percent of all questions correct in order to pass.

Test Questions

A scaled score does not necessarily mean that you need to get 200 correct answers in order to pass. In fact, the FTCE Chemistry does not even contain 200 questions.

The length of the test is approximately 100 questions, all of which are multiple-choice. In order to pass the FTCE Chemistry exam, candidates will need to answer about 72 questions out of 100 correctly.

Test Duration

Candidates will have two hours and 30 minutes to complete the entire test. This period does not include breaks; any time spent resting will be counted toward the total time.

Test Structure

As with all other FTCE exams, the chemistry test is divided into a series of competencies, each of which focuses on a specific subject or topic. The eight competencies for the chemistry exam, as well as the percentage of the exam that they constitute, are as follows:

  • Competency 1: The nature of matter (10%)
  • Competency 2: Energy and its interaction with matter (14%)
  • Competency 3: Bonding and molecular structure (18%)
  • Competency 4 Chemical reactions and stoichiometry (21%)
  • Competency 5 Atomic theory and structure (12%)
  • Competency 6: The nature of science (10%)
  • Competency 7: Measurement (10%)
  • Competency 8: Appropriate laboratory use and procedures (5%)

Scores on this test are calculated on an overall basis, meaning that a candidate's performance on individual domains is not important. Even if you struggle with Competency 1, for example, a strong performance on Competency 4 can redeem you.

Getting Ready for the FTCE Chemistry 6-12

Now that you know exactly what a passing score is, it's time to get to work on obtaining such a score.

Pearson Education, the company that administers the exam, publishes a series of materials related to the test that is extremely beneficial. Materials include an interactive tutorial for the computer-based testing format, a detailed blueprint of the competencies, and a helpful test information guide.

Study.com offers study resources that can help you prepare for each competency that's included on the exam.
