FTCE Elementary Education K-6: Passing Score

Instructor: Bill Sands
In order to pass the FTCE Elementary Education K-6 Test, you'll need to pass each of the four subtests. Read on for an explanation of this test's scoring system.

FTCE Elementary Education Passing Score

The Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) Elementary Education K-6 assessment is divided into four subtests and is scored on a pass/no pass basis.

In order to pass this exam, candidates will need to earn a scaled score of at least 200 on each of the four subtests.

Elementary Education K-6 Scoring System

When grading this exam, FTCE administrators do not use a candidate's raw score, which is the exact number of questions answered correctly. Instead, they use a scaling system that is based on the difficulty of the test and the percentage of correct answers.

For this exam, earning a score of 200 means getting a certain percentage of correct answers on each subtest. For Subtest I, candidates will need at least 72 percent; for the other three, they need 70 percent.

Based on the number of questions, here's the approximate number of questions you'll need to get right in order to pass each subtest:

  • Subtest I: 60 questions total, 43 correct needed
  • Subtest II: 55 questions total, 39 correct needed
  • Subtest III: 55 questions total, 39 correct needed
  • Subtest IV: 50 questions total, 35 correct needed

These numbers are approximate, as the number of questions on the test varies from year to year. As the overall number changes, the number of correct answers also changes.

Scoring System Purpose

So why do administrators bother to use this system? Why not keep things simple and just use raw scores?

The FTCE offers various forms of each exam, and not every exam contains the same number of questions. Using a scaled system makes it easier to set a minimum passing score across all formats of a particular exam.

Retaking the Exam

Failure on any one of the subsections will result in an overall failure for the entire test.

Fortunately, the FTCE retake policy does not require you to redo the entire exam. You will only need to retake the subtests that you failed on your initial try. Note that you'll have to wait a minimum of 31 days after you've initially taken the test before you can retake any section. You will also have to register for the exam again and pay a retake fee.
