FTCE Retake Policy

Instructor: Bill Sands
If you did not pass your FTCE exam on the first try, you'll need to take the test again. Read on to learn more about the retake policy for these tests, and find some helpful study guides that might help you improve your scores.

Retaking FTCE Tests

If you've already taken an FTCE exam and failed to receive a passing score, you may be wondering how you can go about taking the test a second time.

Retake Limit

Fortunately for students who need to take an FTCE test again, there is no limit on the number of times you can take any one test.

Wait Period

Candidates who desire a retest must wait at least 31 days before sitting for a retake. If you fail to observe this policy, your scores will be voided.

Complete & Partial Retakes

In most instances, candidates must retake the entire test, not just the sections that they have failed.

This policy is not, however, applicable to all variations of the FTCE. There are exceptions. For the following tests, candidates only need to retake the sections that were failed on the initial attempt:

  • General Knowledge
  • German K-12
  • Speech 6-12
  • Elementary Education K-6
  • Prekindergarten/Primary PK-3
  • English 6-12
  • Middle Grades English 5-9

Re-registration & Fees

In order to take an FTCE test again, you'll need to complete the same registration process as you did for your first attempt. This procedure includes the registration fee, which must be paid in full.

The retake fee varies from test to test, but in most cases, the new fee is $20 more than the one paid for the original test. For example, candidates taking the Educational Media Specialist PK-12 exam pay $200 to register for their first attempt, but this figure climbs to $220 for all subsequent retakes. For the Professional Education Test, the first attempt fee is $150 and the retake fee is $170.

Depending on the test, candidates taking exams mentioned in the 'exceptions' list, may only need to pay for the sections they are retaking. Check out the table below to see the retake fees associated with each test:

FTCE TestRetake Fee
English 6-12 $150 for 1 subtest
$220 for the entire test
Middle Grades English 5-9$150 for 1 subtest
$220 to retake the entire test
Prekindergarten/Primary PK-3$150 for 1 subtest
$200 for 2 subtests
$220 for 3 subtests and up
German K-12$220 regardless if you retake 1 or 2 subtests
Elementary Education K-6$150 for 1 subtest
$200 for 2 subtests
$220 for 3 subtests and up
General Knowledge Test$150 for any number of subtests you take
Speech 6-12$220 regardless if you retake 1 or 2 subtests

FTCE Retake Format

It is worth noting that retakes are formatted in an identical manner to the original. You will not be given extra time, nor will any extra accommodations be afforded during your testing period.

Studying for a Retake

In order to make sure you pass the second time around, you may benefit from some additional practice.

You already have a head start in that you're familiar with the test format and structure, and your first attempt should give you a good idea of what to expect the next time around.

To prepare even further, take a look at the following study guides, each of which corresponds to a specific FTCE test.
