Check out Georgia's science standards with this article. You can find out what students will study from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Helpful learning resources are also provided.

Science Standards in Georgia

Georgia designed its science standards to focus on both the characteristics of science and scientific content. Standards work to ensure that students perform important scientific skills at difficulty levels suited to their age. All students will practice applying their scientific abilities to research, conduct experiments, consider their surroundings and communicate effectively.

Georgia Elementary School Science Standards

In all elementary grade levels, Georgia students will study earth science, physical science and life science. The specific content areas are described below, and kids can check out these science lessons to reinforce what they're learning.

Kindergartners have the chance to develop a foundational understanding of science. They will study:

  • Time patterns
  • Celestial objects
  • Rocks and soil
  • Physical properties and attributes of objects
  • Types of motion and gravity
  • Ways that organisms are the same and different

1st Grade

In 1st grade students will be able to develop an understanding of:

  • Weather, climate and water
  • Light, sound and magnets
  • Needs and characteristics of living things

2nd Grade

Teachers in this grade will help students learn about:

  • Attributes of stars
  • The position of the sun and moon
  • What causes changes in objects
  • Properties of matter
  • Energy
  • The life cycle of plants and animals

3rd Grade

Students in 3rd grade will focus on:

  • Characteristics of rocks and soil
  • Fossils
  • Heat, temperature and magnets
  • The relationship between organisms and their ecosystems
  • Pollution

4th Grade

4th graders will spend class time studying:

  • Characteristics of stars, planets and the Earth's motion
  • States of water
  • Weather maps and weather data
  • The nature of light
  • How sound is produced
  • Force and motion
  • Energy in an ecosystem
  • Behaviors and features related to organism survival

5th Grade

Students at this grade will go over:

  • The Earth's surface
  • Object structures
  • Physical and chemical changes
  • Electricity and magnetism
  • Classification of organisms
  • Heredity
  • Parts of cells
  • Microorganisms

Georgia Middle School Science Standards

Georgia introduces reading comprehension standards in middle school. Middle schoolers will also study the three core content areas of life, earth and physical science. Using these life, earth and physical science courses, students can get a more comprehensive understanding of these areas of science at any time that's most convenient for them.

6th Grade

Students in 6th grade will explore the:

  • Formation of the universe and the Earth's surface
  • Positions of the sun, moon and Earth
  • Importance of water
  • Relationship between land, oceans, climate and weather
  • Sources of energy

7th Grade

Throughout this grade, students will have the chance to study:

  • Organism diversity
  • Cells and tissues
  • Organs and organ systems
  • Hereditary traits and inherited characteristics
  • Organism dependence and survival

8th Grade

This grade level will include instruction in:

  • The nature of matter
  • Forms of energy
  • Force, mass and motion
  • Sound and electromagnetic radiation
  • Gravity, electricity and magnetism

Georgia High School Science Standards

In high school, students focus more on specific scientific areas in their classes. High schoolers must complete classes in biology, physics or physical science, in addition to two other courses of their choice. Students can check out these biology, physical science and physics courses as a way to learn more about these areas of science:

In biology, students will work to understand:

  • The structure and function of cells
  • Biological traits
  • Single-celled and multi-celled organisms
  • Ecosystems
  • Natural selection

Physical Science

Students in this class will focus on:

  • Atoms and matter
  • Radioactivity
  • The Periodic Table
  • Solutions and transformations
  • Force, mass, motion and waves
  • Magnetism and electricity

In a physics class, students will learn about:

  • Force, mass, gravity and the structure of matter
  • Forms of energy and waves
  • Electricity and magnetism
  • Newtonian physics
