DSST Test Scoring
DSST exams typically are scored on a range with specific scores designated for passing (or a C-grade equivalent) and a B-grade equivalent.
|DSST Exam Type||Scoring Range||C-Grade Equivalent (passing) Score||B-Grade Equivalent Score|
|New and revised exams (2008 to present)||200-500||400||434|
|Exams prior to 2008*||20-80||44-49 (score range)||48-54 (score range)|
*As of 2014, approximately eight DSST tests are still scored on the pre-2008 scale.
The B-grade equivalent was established to help students applying at colleges and universities that require more than a C-grade DSST score to award credit.
Scoring and Credit
Students who earn passing or B-grade equivalent scores on DSST credit-by-examination tests can receive college credits for equivalent coursework at many colleges and universities.
How to Earn College Credit

- Check Your School's DSST Testing Policies. Nearly 2,000 colleges and universities award credit based on DSST exams, but each institution determines the individual tests for which they award credit, and the minimum passing score for applicable DSST tests.
- Prepare for Exams. Official DSST practice tests are found online for a small fee. These practice tests are designed to help test-takers understand exam structure and identify areas of weakness. Online prep courses, meanwhile, help students prepare for the content of DSST tests and improve their knowledge in test-related subject areas.
- Schedule an Exam. Students need to contact their local testing center to schedule their exam and pay the test fee. Test center info can be found online.
About the Tests
More than 30 DSST tests are available in six subject areas. Tests are paper- or computer-based and each is two hours long. DSST exams typically comprise multiple-choice questions, and students are not penalized for wrong answers on these tests.
