Praxis Test Length
There are many different Praxis tests and the length of time for the Praxis tests vary. In order to get a sense of the typical amount of time allotted for Praxis tests some of the most common types are explored here.
Three subtests make up the Praxis Core, and they are used to assess the basic skills of applicants. The Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading and Core Academic Skills for Educators: Mathematics subtests both take 85 minutes and contain 56 questions.
The Core Academic Skills for Educators: Writing subtest is 100 minutes long with 40 minutes allotted for answering 40 selected-response questions. Applicants must also answer 2 essay questions and are given 30 minutes to respond to each one.
In total, the Praxis Core takes 270 minutes (4.5 hours).
Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Praxis
There are 4 PLT Praxis tests that are all 2 hours in length. These tests are designed to target the grade level the applicant plans to teach. Applicants can choose from the following:
- PLT: Early Childhood
- PLT: Grades K-6
- PLT: Grades 5-9
- PLT: Grades 7-12
All 4 PLT tests have a total of 74 questions, including 4 constructed-response questions. The rest of the questions are presented in selected-response format.
Grade-Level Praxis Tests
Some Praxis tests are specifically designed to qualify applicants to work with children in specific age or grade groups.
The Education of Young Children Praxis test is designed for individuals who want to work with children from birth through to the age of 8. Applicants are given 150 minutes to complete this 123-question test.
Those who want to work with children ages 2 through 5 may be required to take the Pre-Kindergarten Education Praxis. This exam lasts 2 hours and contains 100 questions.
The Elementary Education: Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment test is 130 minutes long and contains 120 questions.
Applicants who are required to take the Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects Praxis must complete 4 subtests. The mathematics, science and social studies subtests are each 50 minutes long. The mathematics test has 40 questions, the science test is comprised of 50 questions, and there are 55 questions on the social studies test. The 65-question reading and language arts subtest is 60 minutes long. The total length of time needed to complete this Praxis test is 210 minutes (3.5 hours).
The Middle School: Social Studies Praxis is a 93-question 2-hour test. Candidates have 2.5 hours to complete the 125 questions on the Middle School: Science test.
The Middle School: Mathematics Praxis covers 55 questions in 2 hours. A total of 160 minutes is allocated to applicants taking the 112-question Middle School English Language Arts exam.
Content Knowledge Praxis Tests
There are a number of content knowledge tests that are used to qualify applicants to teach a specific subject at different grade levels or to ensure applicants have the skills and knowledge needed to teach a specific subject area, such as art, to all grade levels.
Examples of Grade-Level Content Knowledge Tests
The Elementary Education: Content Knowledge exam and Middle School: Content Knowledge Praxis are both allotted 2 hours to complete the 120 questions on the tests.
Examples of Subject-Area Content Knowledge Tests
Mathematics: Content Knowledge is a 2.5-hour test with 60 questions while the Biology: Content Knowledge test contains 150 questions and takes 2.5 hours.
The Art: Content Knowledge Praxis and Music: Content Knowledge Praxis are examples of tests used to qualify applicants to teach children from kindergarten through grade 12. Both of these tests have 120 questions and last 2 hours.
World Language Praxis Tests
There are a number of languages that can be certified through Praxis tests. Here, we'll discuss a few.
The American Sign Language Praxis is a 20-25 minute American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI).
The Spanish: World Language, French: World Language and German: World Language tests are all comprised of 81 questions and take approximately 3 hours to complete.
The main part of the Chinese (Mandarin): World Language test is approximately 3 hours in length and has 83 questions. Applicants must also complete a 10-minute Listening Practice subtest that has 6 questions.
