Interested in earning a micro-credential, but not sure where to start? There are many places to earn these credentials which can help elevate your career. Keep reading to find out how to earn these new credentials and where to begin.

What Are Micro-Credentials?

A micro-credential is like a mini-degree or certification in a topic area. Topics may range from educational, such as 'Teaching Division to High Needs Students,' to business-related, such as 'Leading Effective Meetings.' Anyone can create a micro-credential, and whoever creates the micro-credential decides on the requirements and rigor involved in earning it. A person can earn a micro-credential by completing a series of required tasks. In return you receive proof that you did the work.

Finding the Right Micro-Credential

In some ways, micro-credentials are like college degrees or certificates. Like college degrees, there are many different types of micro-credentials, and the requirements can vastly differ for each. For example, a micro-credential from Organization A in 'Teaching Collaboration Skills' might require completing a video series and passing multiple assessments, whereas a similar micro-credential from Organization B might require the submission of a portfolio containing student work examples. It's important to check on the requirements of each micro-credential to ensure it meets your needs.

How Long Does it Take to Earn a Micro-Credential?

Unlike some traditional paths to certification that can take years to complete, earning some micro-credentials can take as little as a few weeks or even days. Since anyone can create a micro-credential and there are no official regulations determining the length or content, the time required will vary. To return to the previous example, it might take four days to earn the micro-credential from Organization A, but up to six-weeks to earn it from Organization B. Again, it's important to take a look at the requirements before you begin to determine if it's the right fit for you.
