How to Pass 6th Grade

Instructor: Shelby Golden
Use this article to help your students or children get ready to successfully complete 6th grade. Find information about succeeding in class and any end-of-grade tests that might be required.

Tips for Passing 6th Grade Classes

Classes will vary from school district to school district, but most 6th grade students will need to pass core classes in math, language arts, science and social studies. Additionally, most schools will require electives in physical education, the arts and language.

Attend Class

Consistent classroom attendance is an important step for students looking to successfully pass the 6th grade. Class time allows students to get the instruction they need from their teachers and ask any questions that they need help with.

Take Notes

Students should work on taking careful notes during their class periods. Have them concentrate on writing down what their teachers write on the board, as well as any terms they're unfamiliar with. They should also record any equations they learn in their math or science classes.

Study Regularly

6th grade class work might be more difficult than most students are used to dealing with. Students should get used to studying every day and completing all of their homework assignments. Encourage kids to pace themselves. Sometimes it's tempting to try to study all at once and get it over with, but that's not practical if your student wants to pass all of his or her classes. Working a little at a time will be more beneficial.

Join a Study Group

Study groups are also a great advantage for this grade. Children can get together to work on concepts they don't understand and to quiz one another on different topics. These groups can also work well when kids are preparing for larger projects throughout the school year.

Hire a Tutor

If your child is struggling with his or her coursework or doesn't seem to be grasping new concepts quickly, you might consider hiring a tutor. Tutors can provide specialized, one-on-one attention for your child and have the ability to focus on just the concepts your student is struggling to understand.

Review Online

Students can also review what they're learning in class through online resources. Study.com offers courses specifically designed to help 6th graders get a handle on what they're learning. These courses are full of video lessons that hold students' attention. There are also short quizzes that make it easy for kids to monitor their progress. Check out these courses that cover:

Passing 6th Grade End-of-Grade Exams

Some school districts require 6th graders to pass end-of-grade exams, such as Smarter Balanced Assessments or state-sponsored exams like the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) or Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). These exams will generally test students on what they've learned through the school year.

Online study resources are available to help students master these exams and feature lessons that cover all the concepts students might be tested on. These courses also include practice questions that can help kids get used to answering problems similar to the ones that will appear on the exams. These guides can be used to prepare for:
